President’s Message (January 2026)

A Message From the President – January, 2026

Dear APTA Indiana Members,

Happy New Year! As we begin 2026, it’s a great time to reflect on the progress we’ve made and look forward to the opportunities ahead.

Direct Access Advocacy Update

We worked hard this session to get legislation introduced that would remove restrictions on direct access, under the sponsorship of Senator Tyler Johnson. Unfortunately, due to the shortened legislative session and competing priorities at the statehouse, our bill did not receive a committee hearing.

While this is disappointing, our efforts were far from wasted:

  • We strengthened relationships with key legislators.
  • We took a strong stance on policy that benefits both the public and the physical therapy profession.
  • We educated lawmakers on this critical issue—momentum that will carry us forward into future sessions.

Progress is incremental, and every step matters. To keep moving forward, we need all hands on deck. You can help by:

Additional Advocacy Opportunity: Everybody Can Move

Although direct access didn’t advance this session, you can still make a difference by supporting the Everybody Can Move bill.

What does this bill do?

It ensures that Medicaid covers prosthetic and orthotic devices that allow individuals with limb loss or mobility impairments to fully participate in life—not just basic mobility. This is about equity, independence, and health.
